May 10 - Cambridge
May 10 - Cambridge
Our itinerary today, in part, had been to visit a couple of Cambridge’s well known university campuses. However, because we’re here during exam time, this plan was somewhat curtailed and many of the college buildings are presently closed to visitors. Fortunately though it’s still possible to visit some of the grounds and chapels and so this was our new plan.
Our first visit was to Kings College, one of the 31 constituent Colleges that make up the University of Cambridge, and founded by King Henry VI in 1441. However, due to politics, civil war, and the lack of funds, it was only completed during the reign of Henry VIII some hundred years later. While the buildings across the whole campus are pretty special the chapel in particular is spectacular and is regarded as one of the greatest examples of late English Gothic architecture in existence.
After climbing the tower at Great St Mary’s Church, to view Cambridge from above, we explored town again before visiting St John’s, another college that has a magnificent chapel.
