July 06 - Cologne to Utrecht (Netherlands)
A bit of a longish travel day today as we left Cologne for Utrecht. With a late check-in, and two of our three trains running late, it probably seemed worse than it was. However, I must admit that once out of Germany we did travel through some lovely countryside which made up for the delays.
On arrival, and booked in, we took off for a wander around Utrecht old town. With canals, bridges, and buildings going back to the early Middle Ages, it’s a really nice place and just like a mini Amsterdam. One of the city’s more unusual features is a wharf system in its inner circle of canals. Once used for the importing and exporting of goods in and out of town these are now being used by bars, restaurants, and other small businesses. We even saw what looked like a seniors bridge club in action, along with their own bar!
