July 09 - Utrecht to Delft
What a lovely morning we had for a travel day. Sunshine, delicious brekky in Utrecht, some really nice countryside scenery from the train journey here, and then the delightful city of Delft itself. It certainly makes travelling easy when it’s like this.
On arrival we found that this beautifully preserved medieval town, with its canals, bridges, cobbled streets, and architecture, was in full swing with its weekly market. With fruit and veg, loads of cheese, flowers, and waffles, in addition to a substantial antique/ flea market as well that seemed to take over the whole place. It was great, and we just wandered around town taking it all in.
After getting some guidance from a lovely lady from our hotel we took off to the Vermeer Centre. Based on the artist who was born in Delft, this museum is home to a collection of exact copies of all his remaining paintings. Although having no originals this was a fantastic display and, with the additional presentations on Vermeer's working methods with camera obscura and perspective, a visit to this place is highly recommended.
