Sept 17 - Florence to Lucca
Sept 17 - Florence to Lucca
A travel day.
Off to Lucca today, a lovely walled city that still has a complete intact wall surrounding the old town.
Due to the vagaries of the Italian train system this morning we were running a bit late to meet our host. Fortunately though this delay was a bit of good fortune for us as the additional time meant that the downpour that we’d been travelling through had had enough time to stop and so we arrived to bright sunshine and ready to go.
One of our lasting memories from the last time we were here, about twenty years ago, was the walk around the medieval city walls, and so this is where we took off to on arrival. The path on top of these walls, about 5kms around, flat and wide, and lined with trees and benches, has some great views and, with the city on one side and mountains on the other, it’s pretty popular with walkers and cyclists. One thing that we hadn’t realised previously is that each of the four principal sides of the old town walls is lined with a different tree species than the others, what a nice touch.
